Questions
Straight answers about hypnotherapy, what it can help with, and what it can’t.
The questions we’re asked most often. If yours isn’t here, ask it on your discovery chat.
What are hypnotherapy and hypnosis?
Film and television have done hypnosis no favours. It isn’t sleep, it isn’t unconsciousness, and nobody takes control of you.
Hypnosis is a state of focused, relaxed attention. You’ve been in it many times today: driving a familiar road on autopilot, or losing yourself in a view. In that state your mind is fully working and you remain in control — you simply have easier access to the part of you where long-held habits and assumptions are stored.
Hypnotherapy uses conversation, and that state of focused attention, to work on what you want to change.
Will I have to do anything besides turning up?
Yes — and this is the most important thing on this page.
Think of it as a pilot and co-pilot. You’re the pilot: it’s your journey and your hands on the controls. Your hypnotherapist is beside you, reading the instruments and helping you navigate.
You’ll have things to practise between sessions. Change happens because you want it and act on it. Nothing that happens in the chair removes that. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
How does a session work?
Two parts.
First we talk — about where you are, what you’d like to be different, and what a good outcome looks like for you. This part is forward-looking: we spend our time on where you’re going, not on excavating where you’ve been.
Then the hypnosis itself. You sit back and listen; there’s a calm voice and some quiet music. It’s a deeply relaxed state in which you consolidate what we’ve discussed. Everyone takes it in differently, and there’s no way to do it wrong.
What can hypnotherapy help with?
The Committee of Advertising Practice — which sets the rules we follow here — accepts that hypnotherapy can be used to help relieve anxiety and aid sleep, and can help with confidence and eating problems. That’s the honest scope of what we’ll claim.
In practice, people come to us about pressure that won’t switch off, confidence that hasn’t kept up with their career, sleep that’s stopped working, speaking in public, habits they’d like to change, focus, and the relationships around them.
We don’t claim to treat medical conditions, and you’ll notice we don’t name any on this site. That’s deliberate. If what you’re carrying needs medical care, the right first step is your GP — and hypnotherapy alongside proper treatment is a conversation to have with them, not with us.
Is hypnosis safe?
Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention — you don’t lose consciousness and you don’t lose self-control. You can end a session whenever you want.

That said: hypnotherapy is not a substitute for medical care, and it isn’t right for everyone or for everything. If you’re being treated for a health condition, tell your doctor you’re considering it.
Will I have to talk about personal things?
Only what you choose to. We work on where you want to get to, not on a tour of your past. Plenty of people are surprised by how little archaeology is involved.
How many sessions will I need?
Usually somewhere around three to five — but that’s an average, not a promise, and it depends entirely on you and on what you’re working on. We’ll talk it through at your first consultation and agree a plan together. Sessions are typically weekly or fortnightly, and tend to space out over time.
When should I speak to my doctor instead?
Please speak to your GP first if you’re dealing with a diagnosed medical or mental health condition, if you’re in crisis, or if something frightens you about how you’re feeling.
Hypnotherapy does not replace medical care, and nothing on this site is medical advice. We would always rather you had the right help than our help. If you’re already under a doctor’s care and want to explore hypnotherapy alongside it, that’s a conversation to have with them.
